01.02.2024

At the end of 2023, members of the Royal Perth Hospital Nursing Research Foundation (NRF) voted unanimously to wind up and join the RPH Research Foundation.

The RPH Research Foundation will continue the NRF’s legacy of supporting nursing & midwifery research at Royal Perth Bentley Group and across the East Metropolitan Health Service.

RPH Research Foundation Board Chair, Mr John Palermo, expressed the Foundation’s commitment to supporting nursing & midwifery research, stating, “RPH Research Foundation recognises the importance of nurse and midwifery-led research as an essential part of enhancing patient care.”

“We are proud to continue to strengthen nursing and midwifery research activities across the East Metropolitan Health Service through research grants.”

The Nursing Research Foundation was launched in 2001 by then Executive Director of Nursing, Patricia Tibbett. Established to support nurses undertaking research by providing funding, professional support and networking, the Nursing Research Foundation's legacy will continue through the RPH Research Foundation.

The RPH Research Foundation has collaborated closely with Ms Doris Lombardi, immediate past Chair of the NRF, and Patricia Tibbett throughout the NRF’s wind-up and transfer process, to ensure ongoing support for nursing & midwifery research across the East Metropolitan Health Service.

The RPH Research Foundation is now offering annual Nursing and Allied Health Grants. The Foundation is currently accepting applications for 2024 nursing and midwifery research projects.

In its inaugural year, the Nursing and Allied Health Grants provided funding to four projects covering falls prevention, palliative care, tracheostomy decannulation and cultural sensitivity with Aboriginal patients.

The available funding for the 2024 Nursing and Allied Health Grants has been increased to $75,000, to be awarded across several research projects.

The RPH Research Foundation will continue the Doreen McCarthy Nursing Research Award each year to showcase the outstanding nursing and midwifery research projects happening within the East Metropolitan Health Service.

Funds held by the NRF have been transferred to the RPH Research Foundation, to be used in support of nursing and midwifery research.

The RPH Research Foundation encourages all nursing and midwifery staff across East Metropolitan Health Service to apply for membership of the RPH Research Foundation to help us support essential nursing research.
